Resumo
This article examines the counter-theatricality of right-wing populist performance, arguing that it deploys theatrical and performative techniques to create an illusion of authenticity and anti-establishment sentiment. It analyzes how right-wing populist leaders and movements utilize strategies such as breaking the fourth wall, claiming to speak directly for the people, and presenting themselves as outsiders challenging the political elite. The article explores how these performances aim to dismantle traditional theatrical conventions and create a sense of immediacy and intimacy with their audiences, fostering a perception of genuine connection and shared grievances. By examining specific examples of right-wing populist rhetoric and events, the study reveals how this counter-theatricality functions to legitimize their claims to power and mobilize support.
