This article examines the complex terminological system employed by the Endeh people of central Flores, Indonesia, to describe their kinship and alliance structures. Needham analyzes the intricate web of prescriptive and preferential marriage patterns, focusing on the significance of asymmetric alliance and the role of terminology in reflecting and shaping social relations. He argues that the Endeh system, with its emphasis on prescribed marriage with the mother's brother's daughter (MBD), exemplifies a generalized exchange system. The analysis challenges conventional anthropological understandings of kinship terminology and alliance theory, highlighting the dynamic interplay between language, social structure, and cultural practice
