Resumo

This working paper assesses the relationship between cohabitation, marriage, and health status among adolescents and young adults. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), the authors examine whether premarital cohabitation is associated with poorer health, whether the relationship between cohabitation and health varies by the timing of cohabitation relative to marriage, and whether the relationship between cohabitation and health varies by age. The authors find that adolescents and young adults who cohabit before marriage report poorer health than those who do not cohabit. However, the relationship between cohabitation and health is attenuated when comparing cohabitors who later marry with those who marry without cohabiting first. The authors also find that the negative association between cohabitation and health is stronger for adolescents than for young adults.
