Resumo

This introductory article to a special issue of the International Journal of Mental Health on international studies of severe mental retardation provides a brief overview of the field. It highlights the increasing international attention to this population and the growing body of research exploring various aspects of severe mental retardation, including etiology, prevalence, assessment, intervention, and service delivery. The issue aims to present a diverse range of perspectives and research findings from different countries, contributing to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in supporting individuals with severe mental retardation and their families.
