This article examines the social condition of servile populations (epotha) in Makhuwaland, Mozambique, based on the life story of an individual whose grandmother was abducted into slavery at the turn of the 20th century. Geffray analyzes how the forced removal of women from their matrilineages and their integration into the abductor's kinship group led to the creation of a distinct social group with its own evolving identity. The study contrasts the matrilineal and uxorilocal kinship structures of free Makhuwa with the unique social organization of epotha communities, highlighting the complex power dynamics and obligations that shaped their lives over several generations. The research reveals how the initial act of enslavement and subsequent social reproduction within the epotha group resulted in a new form of social and political identity distinct from the dominant Makhuwa society
