This article examines the enduring anthropological puzzle of matrilateral cross-cousin marriage in Australia. Despite its apparent violation of incest prohibitions and the seemingly negative genetic consequences, this marriage practice has persisted in various Aboriginal societies. The author challenges the traditional functionalist explanations, arguing that they fail to account for the complexity and diversity of Aboriginal kinship systems. Instead, he proposes a structuralist approach, focusing on the symbolic and classificatory aspects of kinship. The article suggests that matrilateral cross-cousin marriage serves to maintain social cohesion and reinforce group identity by creating a system of reciprocal exchange and alliance between different kinship groups. It also explores the role of mythology and ritual in perpetuating these marriage practices, highlighting the importance of understanding indigenous cultural logic and social organization
