Resumo
This introductory chapter to "Domestication Gone Wild" sets the stage for exploring the complex and multifaceted relationships between humans and other species. Moving beyond simplistic notions of domestication as control and wildness as freedom, the authors propose the concept of "the otherwise" to encompass the diverse ways in which multispecies relations are enacted and experienced. They argue that focusing on "the otherwise" allows for a more nuanced understanding of the power dynamics, ethical considerations, and ontological entanglements inherent in human interactions with animals, plants, and microbes. The chapter introduces the key themes and theoretical frameworks that will be explored throughout the book, emphasizing the political and practical dimensions of multispecies relations and calling for a critical examination of the assumptions and categories that shape our understanding of the living world.
