This article examines the relationship between violence and politics in the life stories of three women living in Sapopemba, a poor district on the periphery of São Paulo. Drawing on long-term ethnographic research, it explores how these women experience and negotiate violence in their everyday lives, and how this shapes their political subjectivities and engagement. The article argues that violence is not simply a backdrop to these women's lives, but a constitutive element of their political experience. It highlights the complex and often contradictory ways in which they navigate the precarious boundaries between the legal and the illegal, the formal and the informal, and the public and the private. By focusing on the intimate details of these women's lives, the article sheds light on the broader political dynamics of urban marginality and social exclusion in contemporary Brazil
