Based on long-term fieldwork in the Sochaux-Montbéliard industrial region, the authors analyze the recent transformations of the labor market linked to the strong economic recovery of the years 1998-2001. They focus on the employment of young people "from the housing projects," long kept away from companies, who then massively enter, via temporary work, the Sochaux factory and the automotive equipment manufacturers. The comparison of attitudes at work, as they appear through interviews conducted with both young workers and older workers or team leaders, gives a clear advantage to girls ("serious," "motivated," "sociable") to the detriment of boys. The latter, often prisoners of the "street culture" in which they have been immersed throughout their adolescence, find themselves, at work, questioned in their working-class masculinity
