Resumo

Humans are remarkably social creatures. We cooperate with, learn from and care for each other. These social interactions are often guided and facilitated by empathy, our capacity to share and understand the feelings of others. But what exactly is empathy? How does it work? And what is its role in our social lives? This theme issue brings together leading researchers from a variety of disciplines to address these questions. It showcases cutting-edge research on the nature of empathy, its underlying mechanisms and its multifaceted functions. By combining philosophical analysis with empirical findings from psychology, neuroscience and psychiatry, the issue provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of this important human capacity.
