Resumo

This chapter examines the challenges of translating Aztec poetry, an esoteric idiom embedded in a complex cultural and historical context. Bierhorst argues that the inherent difficulties in conveying the nuances of Nahuatl poetics are compounded by the colonial legacy and the subsequent romanticization of pre-Columbian cultures. He explores how these factors have shaped the reception and interpretation of Aztec poetry in translation, highlighting the tension between preserving the original meaning and creating accessible versions for modern readers. Bierhorst advocates for a more nuanced approach to translation that acknowledges the cultural and historical specificity of the source text while also recognizing the limitations of cross-cultural understanding. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the performative aspects of Aztec poetry, its connection to ritual and oral tradition, and the role of metaphor and symbolism in conveying complex philosophical and religious concepts.
