Reporting, capturing and voicing speech amongst the Araweté

This article examines reported speech practices amongst the Araweté, an indigenous people of Amazonian Brazil. It argues that reported speech in Araweté functions not simply to represent the words of others, but also to capture and embody their voices and perspectives. Through detailed analysis of naturally occurring interactions, the study reveals how Araweté speakers skillfully manipulate reported speech to create vivid portrayals of characters and events, often blurring the lines between representation and performance. The article highlights the importance of considering the embodied and performative dimensions of reported speech in understanding its communicative functions in different cultural contexts
