Resumo
This article examines the social organization and adaptive strategies of the Sacha Runa, a group of Quichua-speaking people inhabiting the Upper Amazonian region of Ecuador. The authors challenge the prevailing view of Amazonian indigenous groups as isolated and culturally homogeneous, highlighting the Sacha Runa's active engagement with the broader Ecuadorian society and economy. They demonstrate how the Sacha Runa have strategically adapted to external pressures, including colonialism, missionization, and market integration, while maintaining their distinct ethnic identity and cultural practices. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding indigenous agency and the dynamic interplay between internal cultural factors and external forces in shaping the social and economic lives of Amazonian peoples.
