Resumo

This article compares and contrasts attitudes towards incest and adultery in a range of societies, arguing that while there are universal prohibitions against incest, the reasons for these prohibitions vary. Goody suggests that the strength of the incest taboo is related to the importance of exogamy and alliance formation in a given society. He also examines the social and cultural factors that influence attitudes towards adultery, noting that while it is often condemned, the severity of the sanctions varies considerably.
