Resumo

This article introduces the concept of “naven” based on fieldwork conducted among the Iatmul people of Papua New Guinea. Naven refers to a ceremonial behavior pattern characterized by formalized transvestism and dramatic displays of emotion, particularly between certain relatives. The authors analyze naven as a complex social phenomenon with multiple functions, including the expression and regulation of emotional tensions, the reinforcement of social roles and relationships, and the transmission of cultural values. They explore the psychological and sociological dimensions of naven, highlighting its role in individual development and social integration. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural context in interpreting behavior and challenges traditional Western notions of personality and emotion.
