Resumo

This article examines the development of sport and leisure within the context of Elias and Dunning's civilizing process. It argues that the quest for excitement and tension-release has been a driving force in the evolution of leisure activities, particularly sports. The authors explore how the civilizing process, with its increasing control over emotions and behavior, has shaped the ways in which individuals seek and experience excitement. They analyze the changing nature of sports, from more violent and uncontrolled forms to more regulated and formalized activities, and discuss the role of social class and power dynamics in shaping leisure preferences. The article also considers the implications of the civilizing process for the future of sport and leisure, suggesting that the search for excitement will continue to be a central motivating factor.
