Resumo
This article examines the geopolitical organization of the Nambiquara, an indigenous group inhabiting the Mato Grosso region of Brazil. It challenges the traditional anthropological view of them as isolated and lacking complex social structures. Price argues that the Nambiquara possess a sophisticated understanding of territoriality and intergroup relations, which he terms a 'geopolitical' organization. This organization is based on a dynamic system of alliances and rivalries, influenced by factors such as resource availability, demographic fluctuations, and historical interactions with other indigenous groups and encroaching settlers. The article draws on ethnographic data collected by the author to illustrate how Nambiquara social structure and ritual practices reflect their geopolitical strategies. Price concludes that understanding the Nambiquara's geopolitical organization is crucial for comprehending their history, social dynamics, and responses to external pressures.
