Resumo
This chapter examines the nature and implications of abstraction in mainstream Western economics. It argues that economists' reliance on abstract models, detached from the complexities of real-world economic practices, contributes to a distorted understanding of economic processes. Carrier explores how this abstraction manifests in the treatment of key economic concepts like value, exchange, and markets, demonstrating how it often leads to policies that fail to address the social and ethical dimensions of economic activity. He suggests that a more grounded approach, attentive to the embeddedness of economic practices within broader social and cultural contexts, is necessary for a more accurate and effective economic analysis.
