Resumo
This article examines the political dynamics of the kola trade among tribal communities in West African towns. It challenges the prevailing notion that tribal organization among migrants is solely determined by traditional culture. Instead, it argues that the kola trade itself plays a crucial role in shaping these communities. The study focuses on how competition and cooperation within the kola trade influence the formation of tribal identities and political structures. It finds that migrants strategically utilize their tribal affiliations to gain advantages in the kola market, leading to the emergence of new forms of tribal organization. The research highlights the complex interplay between economic interests, social networks, and political power in the urban context of West Africa.
