Resumo

In "Violent Measures: Erasure, Excess, and Sexuality in a Sri Lankan Community," E. Valentine Daniel explores the complex interplay of violence, sexuality, and social erasure within a specific Sri Lankan community. He examines how seemingly disparate events, such as a young man's suicide, a woman's elopement, and instances of spirit possession, are interconnected and reveal underlying tensions related to caste, gender, and power. Daniel argues that these events, often perceived as isolated incidents of madness or transgression, are actually expressions of a deeper social logic. He uses the concept of "erasure" to describe how certain individuals and their experiences are systematically marginalized and rendered invisible within the dominant social narrative. The chapter delves into the ways in which violence, both physical and symbolic, is used to maintain social hierarchies and control female sexuality. Daniel's analysis draws on ethnographic fieldwork and offers a nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics at play within this community.
