Resumo

This article critiques the dominant paradigm of development in Lesotho, arguing that it functions as an "anti-politics machine." Murray and Ferguson demonstrate how development discourse and practice depoliticize poverty and inequality by framing them as technical problems requiring managerial solutions. This process, they contend, reinforces existing power structures and marginalizes local voices. Focusing on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, the authors illustrate how bureaucratic procedures and the language of development expertise serve to silence dissent and legitimize interventions that primarily benefit external actors and elites. They argue that this depoliticization ultimately undermines the potential for genuine, locally driven development.
