Two Muslim villages in Maler Kotla District, East Punjab, India are compared with a village in the West Punjab, Pakistan, with regard to marriage between patrilateral parallel cousins. It is found that in the West Punjab village there is a high preference for and high rate of such marriages, comparable to that in some Middle Eastern Muslim communities, while the preference for and frequency of patrilateral endogamous marriages in the East Punjabi Muslim communities is low. It has been confirmed in studies in Middle Eastern communities and in a previous study by the author in West Pakistan that patrilateral parallel cousin marriages cement political alliances among patrilineal kin; it is hypothesized that an autocratic regime in the historical state of Maler Kotla has resulted in the suppression of such alliances, consequently of patrilineally endogamous marriages. This view is further supported by the prevalence of marriages between other cousins in all villages studied, the high rate of exchange marriages in the Maler Kotla villages as compared to the West Punjabi village, reflecting a weakening of the patrilineal kin group in the former, and evidence of strong political control in Maler Kotla District
