IN 1972 THE SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGY APPROVED AND SPONsored the text of a proposed booklet, Above Ground Archaeology, for publication by The Government Printing Office for The American Revolution Bicentennial Administration. The text was also reviewed and approved by The American Association of Museums and The American Society for State and Local History. The concept and text were the offering to the ARBA Advisory Panel Conservation by the delegate of The Society for American Archaeology, John L. Cotter, Associate Professor of American Civilization, at the University of Pennsylvania. The booklet is being distributed to boards of education in American secondary schools, but is intended primarily for individual student implementation personal initiative rather than as a teacher-led or teacher-imposed concept. Hopefully, the turned on student will seek the advice not only of teachers but also of museum and historical sites personnel and data conservationsts in the community, county, state and nation. The objective of the booklet is twofold: to conserve sites and data by alerting a new generation to what an individual can do to further such objectives, and to lead to the discovery of personal identity and place in the American scene the part of the student. The text of this booklet is reprinted below. The American Revolution Bicentennial Administration will provide five free copies of the illustrated booklet, Above Ground Archaeology, to any agency or group requesting it. Interested groups should contact: Heritage '76, American Revolution Bicentennial Administration, 736 Jackson Place N.W., Washington, D.C. 20276
