The data presented in this paper were collected in the field, between Jan? uary, 1968, and January, 1969, from the Macha Galla in the vicinity of the small town of Dembidollo (c. 8?30/N, 35?E) in extreme western Ethiopia. Though the traditional culture of this region is being increasingly affected by the impact of Amhara culture and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, by Protestant and Catholic missions, and by the advancing education, money economy, and urban influences in Dembidollo, birth customs still remain largely unaffected. This differs, for example, from the situation with respect to marriage customs and appears to be due to the facts (1) that birth cus? toms are almost exclusively the concern of women and (2) that women in general retain a closer attachment to the traditional patterns of life
