Several themes recur in the papers contributed to this volume. There are geographers who take the bull by the horns; they have their own view of what constitutes 'rural' geography, and they proceed to what they consider to be the major issues at hand. In so doing they use a variety of approaches aimed at a wide range of goals, and in the process they cite a literature that is similarly diverse. And then there are others, whose first concern is with the validity of 'rural' geography as a discrete field of study. Indeed, doubt is expressed regarding the appropriateness of an African focus for any such research
