The origin and subsequent development of the village of Haiderpur, Union Territory of Delhi, are examined in the light of oral and documentary history. Haiderpur appears to have budded from another village in the 18th century, starting with one or two households of high-caste persons; to have added members of other castes at later stages; and to have grown into a multicaste nucleated village, one now under the urbanizing influence of the rapidly-expanding city of Delhi. Haiderpur provides a case study of similar peasant villages in India
