La loi coloniale au Yucatan dependait de la cooptation des leaders indigenes maya connus sous le nom de « batabs ». Le role de ce dernier en tant que courtier et collecteur de taxes continua au debut de la periode nationale. Mais la destabilisation de la structure des taxes rurales ainsi que la rapide commercialisation de l'exploitation fonciere reduisit la loyaute du batab et contribua a la guerre de 1847. Le role du batab se maintint par la suite sous diverses formes a travers la peninsule du Yucatan
