The author contributes to the debate on the demographic impact of the European exploration of the Americas in the fifteenth century. In particular he presents a critique of work by Dean R. Snow and Kim M. Lanphear on the world influenza epidemic of the mid-sixteenth century and its effect on mortality in North America. A response by Snow and Lanphear is included (pp. 299-307). The focus is on the appropriate methodology to be used for such studies. (ANNOTATION)
