The problem of the distribution of resources plays a central role in all peasant societies. This paper examines the specific case of a mountain community, Mase, located in the Canton of the Valais, Switzerland. A brief history of state formation in Switzerland accounts for the relative autonomy and self-sufficiency of the village, thereby justifying the focus on local institutions. In particular, the interaction between inheritance practices and demographic trends is identified as the mechanism which equalized the distribution of wealth throughout the nineteenth century. The process is first described and then its impact on household economic status is assessed using simple statistical methods of data analysis
