We want to make sure that we understand exactly how Northwest Coast social structure functioned before approaching broader comparisons or considering some of its implications for our ideas concerning the nature of cultural evolution. The generalized outlines and the traditional history or development of this social structure must be seen in relationship to the basic economy, as emphasized by the anthropologist, Viola E. Garfield.' It is also important to determine the actual lines of stress and cleavage, the groupings and re-groupings for mutual interest which are created within this society under various conditions. Only an authority with complete grasp of Northwest Coast ethnology could handle this subject adequately in this limited space. I will simply indicate a general direction for this type of analysis, with reference principally to the Nootka-speaking people of the west coast of Vancouver Island.z The fundamental socio-economic unit of Nootka society as well as the unit from which others derive through its expansion is an idealized family which is also a physical household.
