Landlocked between rivers in the heart of South America, Paraguay's traditional isolation from regional or international crisis and its prolonged political stability have occasioned few serious studies. The large number of works written before 1800 indicate a contemporaneous interest in the colonial period, particularly in the work of the Jesuit missions. Furthermore, the first sixty years of Paraguay's independence were widely treated, first in disputes among critics of the authoritarian rule and later by revisionist historians who stressed the aspects of progress and relative social justice.
