La theorie des commandements de Maimonide, qui disait que beaucoup des commandements bibliques devaient etre compris comme des reactions polemiques contre l'idolâtrie ambiante du monde antique, fut l'un des themes que Amos Funkenstein reprit constamment tout au long de sa carriere de professeur. L'A. propose d'abord une interpretation du texte de Funkenstein sur ce sujet, rapport qui fut le premier a comprendre totalement et a mettre dans son contexte la nature de l'historicisme du XIIe siecle de Maimonide
