What distinguishes the work on and by Latin American women, especially that of feminist scholars engaged in interpreting and understanding Latin American reality, is a commitment to the process of con-scientizaci6n, understood in the Freirian sense of raising one's consciousness through cultural action for freedom, developing teaching materials that focus on the most pressing problems of the community; and participating in efforts to change the circumstances that oppress and limit human lives. 1 The books under review here are often explicitly committed to this view, as is indicated by the title of Elsa Chaney's and Mary Garcia Castro's introduction to Muchachas No More: Household Workers in Latin America and the Caribbean, ''A New Field for Research and Action." Simi-Iarly, Isis International's Base de datos mujer / Women's Data Base begins by stating, "Information and communication are basic elements in changing social situations." The need to collect and distribute more accurate information on women's lives was a basic premise of the United Nations
