The trade-union wing of German Social Democracy has not received the attention of historians which its importance in the over-all movement would merit. In any discussion of the so-called 'unpatriotic socialists' before and during the First World War the leadership of the socialist trade unions requires equally as much attention as that of the Social Democratic Party because trade union strength and influence among German workers had by 1914 come to eclipse that of the party.1 As most writers on the behaviour of the S.P.D. in the summer of
