Counting-out has been studied in various languages and cultures by researchers from different disciplines including folklore, linguistics, ethnomusicology, and psychology. Using data mainly from English and French, this article provides evidence for crosslinguistic similarities and proposes specific hypotheses concerning the form, content, performance, and context of the counting-out rhyme and ritual. This leads to a broader discussion of the universals issue within folklore studies as a whole
