Indigenous genre classifications are usually based upon a static view ofgenres and their systems, while an ethnographic approach to the study ofgenre reveals their flexibility. This article examines a central Indian tradition, the sua nac, orparrot dance, from such a perspective. It reveals two performance contexts for the tradition, which emphasize different aspects ofthegenre, but which also continue to influence each other
