During the lastfew decades, Swedish folklife research has increasingly departed from its earlier emphasis on the material aspects ofpeasant culture. The important recent works assessed in this review call attention to the close relationship between folklife research and social planning and cultural politics in Sweden. The works reviewed are further united by their explicit or implicit critique of the negative aspects of the welfare state
