F OR ONE whose academic interests focus on Portugal, it is gratifying to note the relatively large number of books now being issued in English which present various facets of Portuguese eivilizationi to the North American public. Their authors are chiefly British, although Americans occasionally contribute to their number. The five books1 I have been asked to review represelit a typical sample of what the reader of English is provided, a guidebook (with historical introduction), an album of superb black-and-white photographs (with much history), ani excellent historical novel about Alldrea Bianco, a survey of the state of the Portuguese world at the present time (with considerable historical background), and an essay on the development of Portugal (the closest to conventional history of the group). Of these, three are by Americaiis. I regret I have to report that the books are of uneven quality, from one to another and also within themselves. All five cointain unfortunate errors, especially in Portuguese spelling and accents: talha dutrada, Nossa Senhora da Leite; Carre Gadores Acoreanor ( a Portuguese freighter ! ), Comtestaval; Serra de Estrela, Vimeiro; Alfonso Lancarote, Uno Tristran; Martin.s, Grdo Para.
