Although extensive research has been directed toward ethnic identity over the past 15 years, the issue of local identity has been relatively neglected. This article examines localfoci of identity in rural Brittany. Studies of regional ethnic groups in Europe have frequently emphasized the external boundaries dividing such groups from dominant national cultures. In contrast, the present article suggests that internal, local boundaries are emically of greater significance in the construction of cultural identities
