PERHAPS IT IS NOT SURPRISING that such an important and creative country singer as Johnny Cash has not been accorded any detailed study in terms of repertory and style when we consider the infrequency of scholarly comment on modern country and its singers. Coupled with the reluctance of folklorists to take commercialized folk music seriously and the tendency to consider all modern (post-940o) country as part of popular has been the relative lack of focus until recently on the individual singer and his total repertory.
