IN THE OPENING CHAPTER of his book The Savage Mind, Levi-Strauss presents an analogy that illustrates his conception of the nature of mythmaking.' A mythmaker's behavior, Levi-Strauss states, is comparable that of a bricoleur, a handyman who creates phenomena from a finite and heterogeneous set of materials.
