Emiliano Zapata is one of the most significant figures in Mexican history. In early I9II he and a small group of campesinos from the south-central state of Morelos joined a broader rebellion against the regime of long-time president Porfirio Diaz. They fought to stop haciendas from continuing to infringe on the land and water rights of peasant communities in their state and to recover resources that had already been lost. They fought, too, for local liberties-for the right of villagers to take greater responsibility for their own destiny. They fought, in sum, for conditions crucial to the preservation
