A history of birth control in Puerto Rico is presented. Consideration is given to the relationship between family planning as an individual concept and Puerto Ricos needs for a national population policy. The interrelationships among the public health aspects of family planning eugenic factors economic reasons for slowing population growth ecological aspects individual factors and family planning as a factor in promoting equality between the sexes are explored. Attention is also given to the effects of Puerto Ricos dependency on the United States and its predominate adherence to Catholicism
