T he nineteenth century witnessed two transformations that were to influence the development of plantation agriculture in most of the Caribbean islands possessed by the leading European powers. The abolition of slavery called for major adjustments in the relationship between ownership/management and labor force in the sugar industry. Technological advances along with a steady drop in the international price of sugar reinforced the need for the reorganization of production. In response to these changes, planter groups began to rethink the premises on which their past success had rested. The transformations encountered required a different understanding of capital investment and, most importantly, of the organization of labor
