Palmer s chapter, an encapsulation of sections of his Ph.D. dissertation, focuses on nineteenth-century liberal reforms and the efforts to tie society to the "National Campaign against Walker and to Juan Santamaria.Palmer discusses the political and social homogenization of Costa Rica in that period, and in so doing, challenges the mythmakers who created the mold for Costa Rican nationalism and culture.Overall, this book is a modest contribution to Costa Rican historiography. It is good, but not essential reading
