I N April 1838, Joao Francisco Cabucu', a retired army lieutenant, found himself in jail (along with nearly three thousand others) for complicity in the Sabinada rebellion. Rebels-radical liberals and army and militia officers in the city of Salvador, Bahia, had mobilized several thousand people aind had survived a fourmonth siege (November 1837 to March 1838) before being overwhelmed by an equally large governi-ment army that took the city by storm. Cabuoci petitioned a senator to speed his release.
