T HIS article is about historical writing on post-185o Latin America by United States historians during the century since the founding of the American Historical Association in 1885. The wealth of historical literature precludes total coverage or a comprehensive evaluation of those scholarly works specifically identified. It is a truism that historical styles and interests, much like historical movements themselves, do not begin and end at identifiable moments. It is equally true that historical writing in a given era borrows from earlier eras and that, in turn, its orientations, emphases, prejudices, and premises influence the writings of future generations. Thus, to delimit any period of historical writing by precise dates represents a high degree of artificiality.' Still, to organize into a coherent analysis the strengths and deficiencies of the field as fully as possible, given the restraints of space and my conception of my assignment, it seemed appropriate to resort to chronological periods; and I have divided the years to be covered into four discrete eras: 1885-1920, 1920-40, 1940-60, and 1960-84.
