President Li, I was told.. .favors du Tai (an 'independent Taiwan') as opposed to Tai du ('Taiwan independence'). There is, I am told, a difference. The latter refers to what members in the opposition party... have advocated, namely an active policy of seeking and declaring Taiwan's independence as a sovereign state. The former is an adjective describing the process that is occurring today the evolution of Taiwan as an independent political entity which at some point may be in a position to seek formal diplomatic recognition as such from major powers.. .Du Tai is also an attitude, a growing social consensus that Taiwan's economic, political, social and cultural identity (though not necessarily future) is increasingly separate from that of China... I doubt that Li and the KMT have thought through the exact form of an independent Taiwan. Li may simply prefer the evolution of a modified status quo whereby a Taiwanese state is considered by those on both sides of the straits to be a part of the Chinese nation, but is free to pursue economic political and diplomatic ties.'
