R EMARKING ON THE STATE of modern Indonesian historiography, one Indonesian publicist wrote about a decade ago that in Indonesia desire to produce nationalistic literature is almost always much stronger than the desire to conform to scientific standards. Consequently, the value of those writings for the scientific study of Indonesian history is not evident . . .historical works which have been the fruits of real scholarship or of careful, critical accurate and painstaking studies are non-existent.1 This judgement seems unduly harsh, but in one respect it may retain even now a kernel of truth: that the study of the development of their country's nationalism continues to fare rather badly, both in quantity and quality, at the hands of Indonesia's historians. Brief surveys of the nationalist movement as a whole, generally following the chronology of older Dutch writers in which a more or less straight line of development connects organizations like Boedi Oetomo and Sarekat Islam with the Partai Nasional Indonesia and the Gerindo, alternate with too many homiletic and wholly uncritical biographies of early heroes like Pattimura, Imam Bondjol and Diponegoro, or of contemporary figures like Agus Salim, Sudirman, and Sutomo.2 In a recent collection of essays on Indonesian history and historiography (described in its preface as having been initiated by Indonesian scholars to meet growing demand in their country for a more vigorous and enlightened study of Indonesia's history) one searches in vain for a paper or even a section of a paper on the historiography of Indonesian nationalism written by either Indonesians or foreign writers.3
