Les recensements ne peuvent donner, sur les migrations intérieures (ou extérieures), que des indications très partielles; en particulier, ils ne rendent compte souvent que d'une seule migration au plus, pour un migrant qui en a eu plusieurs, entre deux recensements consécutifs. Pour compléter ces données, des enquêtes spéciales de forme longitudinale sont nécessaires. Elles permettent, en particulier, d'étudier les liens entre les changements survenus dans la situation des migrants. M. Daniel Courgeau, chargé de recherches à l'Institut national d'études démographiques, analyse ici les résultats de quelques enquêtes et les complète par une analyse théorique du phénomène
